When a child born abroad is entered in a Chinese household register, the police station asks for the foreign birth certificate with a Chinese translation, and in most cities for the apostille or authentication page as well. Some authorities only take certain translations: some districts of Shanghai (Xuhui is one we know of) require a translation from a Shanghai-based agency, and the Guangzhou exit-entry bureau requires notarised translations.
