What Does a Canton Fair Interpreter Cost? Only the Figures We Could Source (2026)

Most published Canton Fair interpreter prices carry no source and no date. This article lists only traceable list prices with their origin and date: the Fair’s own in-hall rate card (CNY 600/800 a day for English, 800/1,000 for other languages; undated page checked 23 September 2026) and its pre-2020 predecessor, per-language pages from two agencies, a Southern Metropolis Daily report on an interpreter whose asking rate was RMB 400/day while an intermediary-booked job paid her 300 of the 600 the client paid, our own published rates (consecutive and escort from ¥200/hour or ¥800/day, conference SI from ¥5,000/day), and the companion badge fee quotes leave out (RMB 300/day plus a RMB 50 administrative fee) — where the official text defines “used” as having been read by an entry turnstile.

What Does a Canton Fair Interpreter Cost? Only the Figures We Could Source (2026)
Contents

Search for what a Canton Fair interpreter costs and you get numbers that contradict each other: RMB 700, RMB 900, RMB 1,600, RMB 2,000, USD 200, RMB 4,500. Most carry no source and no date.

This article contains only figures we could trace, each labelled with its origin and date. Where we could not find a source, we say so — on this question, "not published anywhere" is far more useful than an invented number.

The 140th session's dates: 15–19 October, 23–27 October and 31 October – 4 November 2026, fifteen days in three phases, with 20–22 October and 28–30 October as changeover days between phases (per the Announcement on Booth Applications for the Export Exhibition of the 140th China Import and Export Fair, 5 May 2026, and the Announcement Inviting Exhibitors to the Trade Services Zone of the 140th Canton Fair, 4 September 2026; consulted 16 September 2026). The badge-fee line cites the Canton Fair's own notice and carries the official definition of "used". We found no official English version of the two announcements cited for the dates, so anything quoted from them is our working translation and the Chinese governs; the 140th-session accompanying-personnel notice does have an official English text, and the fee is quoted from it.

1. The Canton Fair's own rate card: the 2020 archive, and the page that is live today

The Fair runs its own interpreting service through its Buyer Service Centres, and it publishes the price. The page live today (Canton Fair Interpretation Service, checked 23 September 2026) carries no publication date and no revision date. Its scope line is one sentence:

We provide interpretation service inside the Canton Fair Complex during opening hours of the Fair.

Its rates: English, CNY 600 per day for a booth interpreter and CNY 800 per day for an exhibition escort interpreter; other languages, CNY 800 and CNY 1,000. Under 4 hours is charged as half a day, over 4 hours as a full day, paid on site in CNY at the Buyer Service Centres of Areas A, B, C and D. Ten languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Korean and German. Bookings before the Fair, 30 September – 14 October: (020) 8913-8055, ISC@cantonfair.org.cn; during the Fair, 15 October – 4 November, at seven counters in the Complex.

The rate card also has an older version, preserved in Web Archive captures from spring 2020 (Chinese page 28 April 2020, English page 7 May 2020; a 24 October 2019 capture shows the same prices), read:

English: RMB 400–800 per day per person. Other languages: RMB 500–1,000 per day per person.

So: if someone tells you "the official rate is RMB 400–800", they are quoting the pre-2020 card. The current card is CNY 600 / 800 for English and CNY 800 / 1,000 for other languages — for interpreting inside the halls, on fair days only. Factory visits, hotel meetings and anything outside those hours are outside its scope.

Disclosure: the last three rows are our own published rates, from the Translation China FAQ page. Like everything above them they are list prices, not transaction data; every "from" is a floor, and the binding number is the written quote for your language, industry and number of days. They are in the table because this article's standard is "you can click through to the source", and that standard has to apply to us too.

A few cautions. Every one of these is a rate an agency published about itself — marketing material, not transaction data. Three rows carry no date (Translian's per-language ones), and in this industry a pricing page written once and never revised is normal. And note the word "from": those are floors, not rates.

Of Transfu's three tiers, the one closest to a trade fair is "international conferences and premium exhibitions," not the cheapest tier. Benchmarking the Canton Fair against RMB 700 is not a fair comparison.

3. The most revealing data point: the intermediary margin

Southern Metropolis Daily published a report on 21 April 2023 about interpreters at the 133rd Canton Fair. The interpreter interviewed worked on the exhibitor side, mainly in English (French, Spanish and Turkish are part of her language background). She described three things:

  • Her asking rate was RMB 400 per day, which she characterised as on the low-to-middle side;
  • On one engagement booked through an intermediary, her exhibitor client paid RMB 600 and the intermediary passed her RMB 300;
  • Her actual working hours were 09:00 to 17:30.

To be precise: that RMB 600 was paid by an exhibitor, not a buyer, so the situation is not identical to hiring an interpreter for yourself. But the structure carries across — when work is booked through an intermediary, what is paid and what the interpreter receives can differ by a factor of two.

This is not an argument that intermediaries should not earn a margin; sourcing, vetting and accountability all cost something. But it has a practical implication: what the interpreter receives affects how much they are willing to do for you. When a quote looks unusually cheap, it is worth asking what reaches the interpreter.

4. What quotes usually leave out

This is where budgets actually break.

If you already booked through an agent: the badge still has to be filed from your own buyer account, so ask the agent now for the interpreter's ID and qualification details rather than on filing day.

The accompanying-personnel badge: RMB 300 per day plus a RMB 50 administrative fee. An official charge, set out in the Canton Fair's Badge Application for Accompanying Personnel for Overseas Buyers of the 140th Canton Fair is Now Open (28 September 2026): "A fee of RMB 300 per day plus a RMB 50 administrative fee will be charged. Used badges are non-refundable (a badge is considered used once it has been scanned by entry gates). If a badge is lost, a replacement fee of RMB 200 per badge will be charged." (That is the notice's own official English, missing space included.) "Used" means the badge has been scanned by an entry gate — once your interpreter taps in, that day's fee is gone; a lost badge costs another RMB 200. It almost never appears in an interpreter's quote — so a "RMB 700 per day" interpreter costs you RMB 1,000 a day, plus the one-off RMB 50 administrative fee. See our previous article on Canton Fair interpreter badges.

How many hours a "day" means. Transfu's public page is the most complete: 8 hours is one working day; beyond that is overtime at a rate agreed in advance; less than half a day bills as half a day, more than half but under a full day bills as a full day; and on out-of-town assignments the client covers travel, meals and accommodation. Translian also works to 8 hours but describes overtime as charged "at discretion" and publishes no half-day rule. Two agencies, the same word "day," different terms — settle this before you sign.

International platforms price differently. The Pelago listing shows "from USD 200" for 7 hours, with USD 15 per hour beyond 8 hours, hotel pickup included, but explicitly excluding the USD 50 per-person fair entry ticket, transport during the service and gratuities. It cannot be cancelled.

5. Numbers to treat carefully

Some figures are published — but it matters who is publishing them.

Per-language rate tables do exist, and all of them are agencies marketing themselves. Translian and Transfu both publish one; Transfu also has an older table dated 30 July 2016. Elsewhere you can find posts headed "2026 Canton Fair interpreting rate card" quoting English RMB 1,800–2,500, Russian/French/German/Japanese/Korean RMB 2,800–3,800, and rarer languages RMB 3,800–4,500.

The problem: for the same market, agency pages say RMB 700–1,600 while those posts say RMB 1,800–4,500 — a two-to-threefold gap. None of it is verifiable transaction data, and none comes from the Fair or an industry body. Apart from the Fair's own in-hall card in section 1, we found no primary-source, buyer-verifiable per-language rate table. That card covers only interpreting inside the halls on fair days.

For these, we found no public basis at all:

  • Standard deposit percentages or cancellation terms.
  • A mapping from CATTI level to price. A CATTI certificate is one of the three documents the companion-badge notice lists for the "interpreter" category — that part is officially grounded, though whether any document is accepted is the organiser's call. Any claim that a given level commands a given rate is inference.
  • Any "average Canton Fair rate." No public dataset supports one.

6. How to actually build a budget

Rather than memorising a day rate, use a method:

  1. Put the badge on its own line: days × RMB 300, plus a RMB 50 administrative fee. Across three phases the daily part is RMB 4,500; the notice does not say whether the RMB 50 is charged once per person, per phase or per badge, so the "about RMB 4,650" figure assumes three badges — that is arithmetic, not text.
  2. Pin down what a "day" means. Eight hours? How is overtime charged? What clock hours — start and finish? What if the job runs short? Agencies differ.
  3. Quote and budget per phase. For the 140th session the phases are 15–19 October, 23–27 October and 31 October – 4 November, with 20–22 October and 28–30 October closed for changeover; do not assume "the whole fair."
  4. If you book through an intermediary, ask what reaches the interpreter. Not haggling — a quality signal. To finish the thought: we are an intermediary too — our quote covers the interpreter's fee plus our matching, vetting, dispatch and accountability, and we do not publish the split.
  5. Expect structural premiums for rarer languages, technical subject matter and late booking. The direction is certain; the magnitude is not published, and a precise multiplier is invented.

7. In one line

The Fair publishes one first-party price — CNY 600 / 800 for English and 800 / 1,000 for other languages, inside the halls on fair days only. Every other traceable Canton Fair interpreting price is an agency's own list price, not a transaction price. Much of the rest is folklore.

When you build the budget, accounting for the RMB 300 per day badge matters more than whether the day rate is 700 or 900.

Sources and currency. The Fair's current rate card comes from its Canton Fair Interpretation Service page (contentNo 802506534755274752 / 802506534755274752EN, undated, checked 23 September 2026); the older card comes from Web Archive captures of the relevant cantonfair.org.cn pages (Chinese 28 April 2020, English 7 May 2020; a 24 October 2019 capture shows the same prices). Translian prices are from its public pages (the RMB 600–900 figure marked as published 10 April 2020; the per-language price page undated). Transfu prices are from its public pages (August 2026, English interpreting; an older table is dated 30 July 2016). The interpreter's asking rate and the intermediary margin come from Southern Metropolis Daily, 21 April 2023. Pelago figures were observed on 22 August 2026. The accompanying-personnel badge fee comes from the Canton Fair website's Badge Application for Accompanying Personnel for Overseas Buyers of the 140th Canton Fair is Now Open (28 September 2026, quoted from its official English version; checked 4 October 2026); the 140th session's dates come from the Announcement on Booth Applications for the Export Exhibition of the 140th China Import and Export Fair (5 May 2026) and the Announcement Inviting Exhibitors to the Trade Services Zone of the 140th Canton Fair (4 September 2026), all consulted on cantonfair.org.cn on 16 September 2026; our own list prices come from this site's FAQ page, checked the same day. All of the above are list or observed figures at those dates, prices change, and none of them constitute a quotation.
